Fugitive Arrested 56 Years After Escaping Prison in 1959

A fugitive from Ohio was arrested in Florida on Monday after being on the run for 56 years.

Frank Freshwaters was taken out of his Melbourne, Fla. home and put into custody by U.S. Marshals. The now 79-year-old man was living under the name William Harold Cox, according to BuzzFeed News.

He was charged and convicted of manslaughter in 1959. Freshwater served seven months out of his 20-year sentence before escaping from the Sandusky Ohio Honor Farm. Priory to his seven months at the farm, Freshwater was sentenced at the Ohio State Reformatory, where "The Shawshank Redemption," a story about an inmate escaping from prison, was filmed.

Freshwater lived under the disguise of Cox in Florida for 20 years while working as a truck driver in multiple states.

Major Tod Goodyear told the Associated Press that because they "couldn't go with a picture and see if it's that guy," authorities tricked Freshwater into signing papers. They were then able to match Freshwater's fingerprints to the samples from his original arrest papers.

"They showed him the pic, and he said he hadn't seen that guy in a long time," Goodyear said. "Then he admitted it and basically said, 'You got me.'"

Marshal Pete Elliott told the AP that Freshwater had left clues to his whereabouts since escaping prison.

"We have a saying in the Marshals Service, 'Let no guilty man escape,' and that is so true in this case," Elliott said.
