Marvel may need to retitle its next "Captain America" movie, "Captain America: Just Another Avengers Movie."
Seven of the 16 cast members announced to star in "Captain America: Civil War" also appeared in last week's "Avengers: Age of Ultron." Marvel released the cast list and the film's synopsis on Thursday as production got underway at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta.
The third installment in the "Captain America" franchise will pick up shortly after the events of "Avengers: Age of Ultron" as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers (revealed in the closing moments of "Ultron") in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.
Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers a.k.a. Captain America, who will have to face off against his fellow Avengers, Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron (Robert Downey Jr.). The other "Age of Ultron" stars crossing over include Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff a.k.a. Black Widow; Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson a.k.a. Falcon; Paul Bettany as The Vision; Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton a.k.a Hawkeye; Don Cheadle as Jim Rhodes a.k.a. War Machine; and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. Scarlet Witch.
Sebastian Stan is back on the scene as Bucky Barnes, who was revealed to be the Winter Soldier in the last "Captain America" movie. After making his debut in this summer "Ant-Man," Paul Rudd will suit up with his fellow Avengers for the first time in "Civil War."
The movie will also see the return of Emily Van Camp as Agent 13 a.k.a. Sharon Carter, Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow a.k.a. Crossbones, and William Hurt as General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, who hasn't been seen since 2008's "The Incredible Hulk."
"Civil War" will introduce Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa a.k.a. Black Panther, Daniel Brühl as the villain, Baron Zemo (not yet confirmed by Marvel), and Martin Freeman, whose character has not been revealed.
In addition to filming in Atlanta, production will also take place in Germany, Puerto Rico and Iceland.
"Captain America: Civil War" will premiere on May 6, 2016.
