Hungtington Beach Riot: Beachgoers Destroy Property While Heckling Police; Event Subject of 'White Crime' Jokes (VIDEOS)

Hungtington Beach held the U.S. Open of Surfing, but the scene quickly turned violent as rioters, who outnumbered police, destroyed property, according to the Los Angeles Times.

In the wake of the riots on July 28, Huntington Beach residents want the event's organizer to scale back.

"We're taking this disturbance very seriously," Huntington Beach City Councilman Joe Carchio told residents at a council meeting Tuesday night.

According to the LA Times, the rioters "tipped over portable toilets, sending waste flowing onto the road Sunday evening." Videos and photos posted on social meadia show people taunting police, and ripping city signs off the streets.

"Police fired pepper balls and nonlethal projectiles to quell them," according to the LA Times. "Several officers suffered minor injuries, and one person was treated and released from a hospital after being hit by a rubber projectile."

Officials told residents Tuesday night they will create a task force to help prevent another violent occurrence in the future.

More than 50 residents reportedly spoke to the City Council on Tuesday night, saying they wanted a more family-friendly event.

"I can't tell you how many bottles of hot sauce were thrown at us," Huntington Beach Police Chief Ken Small told the LA Times.

The police chief estimated at total of 102 local officers on duty during Sunday's riot; there were also 21 volunteers and 148 officers from 21 other agencies.

The riots on Tuesday has caught national attention, and inspired a series of parodies and jokes.

In an MSNBC parody, Chris Hayes talked about the crimes in "white culture," saying that "white power structure in this country has no clue, no clue how to solve the problems within in the white community."

"How long must we wait for white culture to get it together," Hayes added in the video.
