Once a great leader in the world of image storage and photography, the photo website Flickr is trying to take back some of its former glory.
The Yahoo-owned website recently announced that it is building a number of new features into its mobile and web browser interface. These features include a significant update to Flickr's search engine algorithm that will allow users to search for pictures of a certain color range, image size or photo orientation. The update is also adding a new Camera Roll feature, which will let users organize their photos according to 60 pre-set categories.
While Flickr has released some small updates over the last two years, this is actually just the second major update in the last two years. In 2013, the site's interface went through a visual redesign and removed its unlimited storage feature. However, it tried to compensate for this by offering users a free terabyte of storage. The update received mixed reviews from users.
It's unclear how relevant this new update will be for Flickr's business, though.
An Internet Trends report from KCPB recently revealed that users are posting more than 1.8 billion photos to the internet every day. However, Flickr only receives about 10 million of them, which is less than six percent of the total number.
The update is currently available on iOS, Android, PC and Mac.
