Good news for Miami Heat fans: soon-to-be Goran Dragic is likely a lock to re-sign in July. All signs point to Dragic staying in South Beach for the long haul, giving Heat fans the prospect of watching the exciting backcourt of Dragic and Dwyane Wade for at least the next couple years.
Dragic will opt out of his contract sometime in June, but the latest report regarding his free agency indicates both sides are still on track to agree on a new deal in July.
"Goran Dragic will opt out of his contract by the end of next month, and it is unlikely there will be any drama as he and Miami sketch out a new deal to keep him in town," Jason Lieser of the Palm Beach Post wrote last week." Dragic said the Heat are his first choice. If he and the team can 'speak the same language' financially, there will be no reason to hear pitches from eager suitors such as the Lakers and Knicks."
Dragic brings speed and a newfound transition game to Miami's offense. He played in 26 games after Phoenix traded him on Feb. 19, and while his numbers- 16.6 points and 5.2 assists per game - with Miami weren't jaw-dropping, they certainly weren't terrible for a player who had limited time to adjust to a new team and to learn a new offense. In other words, he wasn't a dud like Rajon Rondo was in Dallas.
There've been no negative reports regarding Dragic staying, with the "worst" report claiming Dragic would go wherever the money was. Miami, though, can offer Dragic the most amount of money, and given the number of assets given up for Dragic, there's no way Heat president Pat Riley doesn't give the point guard max-level money if that's what it takes to keep him.
