T-Mobile hasn't had a new Motorola device on its shelves for quite a long time. According to a new statement from the company's CMO Mike Sievert, it doesn't look like the new Moto X will be breaking that streak any time soon.
The company has announced that, although the Moto X will be compatible with T-Mobile's 4G LTE network, it won't be carrying the smartphone in any of its stores at this time.
"We do not plan to stock Moto X devices immediately in our stores but are working closely with Motorola to make the Moto X a great experience for T-Mobile customers," Sievert said.
The Motorola X announced it would be available for all four major U.S. carriers as well as U.S. Cellular. According to PhoneDog, the degree to which each carrier has the phone available is a bit scattered. For example, AT&T is the only carrier that gets the Moto Maker customization tool. This will allow users to go online and request a customized version of the Moto X. It comes with two front colors, white and black, 18 back covers with seven accents. Meanwhile, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless have both barely acknowledged the Moto X's existence.
With the Moto X priced at a level competitive with iPhones, Galaxy S4 phones and the HTC One, many T-Mobile users will likely pass on the device if they cannot hold it in their hands and test it out in the store. In essence, not having the Moto X available in stores is going to greatly impact the phone's ability to be a successful competitor in the emerging smartphone market.
Motorola has set the device at $199 with a two-year contract for all four major carriers as well as US Cellular. Perhaps one of the hiccups with offering the phone through T-Mobile is the fact that the company recently did away with two-year contracts in favor of a cheaper plan that allows people to upgrade their phones twice a year as opposed to once every two years.
