"Doctor Who" fans are only a couple days away from knowing who will be the next Doctor for the Sci-fi British television series, Screen Rant reports.
BBC has plans on making a big show of revealing who will take the place of Matt Smith as the 12th Doctor. According to Screen Rant, BBC has announced that they will air a 30-minute live broadcast special. "Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor" will air simultaneously on BBC America at 2 p.m. and BBC One in the UK at 7 p.m this Sunday, Aug. 4.
The next Doctor has been a closely guarded secret but Peter Capaldi has been rumored as a top contender to take over as the Time Lord. Idris Elba and Bill Tanner have also been mentioned so play the Doctor. Matt Smith, who was the Doctor for the last four years, announced he would be leaving in June.
"We can't wait to unveil the next Doctor... It's the biggest secret in showbiz, even those working with the new Doctor on other projects at the moment have no idea they are in the presence of the 12th incarnation," Ben Stephenson, Controller of BBC Drama Commissioning told CNN.
The special will not only reveal the new actor or actress to take over but will also include special guests and will be hosted by Zoe Bell in front of a studio audience, Screen Rant reports.
"Widely regarded as one of the most hotly contested roles in British television, the special's host Zoe Bell will unveil the Twelfth Doctor in their first ever interview in front of a live studio audience," a press release reads. "The half hour show will include live special guests, Doctors old and new, as well as companies and celebrity fans. Current Doctor Matt Smith and lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat will both give interviews in the special."
Following the big reveal the new Doctor is expected to appear in the Christmas special that will celebrate the show's 50th anniversary. "Doctor Who" first premiered in 1963 and has aired 33 seasons and almost 800 episodes. '
