Apple is responding to the low-cost TV streaming service introduced by Google's Chromecast device earlier last week by lowering the price of its very own TV streaming device, Apple TV.
The popular gadget maker has not seen an impressive turnaround on its Apple TV streaming service that allows users to stream media and apps from a mobile device to his or her TV screen. Previously the system was set at $99 but after Google started making waves with its low-cost streaming device, Apple has responded, although not in the best of ways.
MacRumors reports the pricing move will see the company cut refurbished models price by $10. Apple TV is significantly more expensive than its new rival, the Chromecast, however the additional price might be worth it as Apple offers significantly more apps and, with the use of AirPlay, generally does more by offering apps that can stream content without relying on computer or smartphones to control it. However, Chromecast still has the price advantage and the potential for more apps. Vevo, HBO Go, Vimeo and others are already rumored to be working on systems to adapt to the Chromecast.
If you're an al-Apple household with $99 to spare, AirPlay and Apple TV work great," a reviewer for the Wall Street Journal said. "But, if you want a less costly solution that works with all your devices across platforms, and can wait while Google gradually gets more apps to adopt it, Chromceast is a winner."
In order to put a refurbished Apple TV on the market to consumers, the company takes returns from people who have bought the system and have been displeased with it, for whatever reason. After a quality check to fix any issues that might effect the device's use, Apple allows users to buy a used version of Apple TV. The price of which is now down as low as $75.
While this is still a far cry from Chromecast's $35 price tag, it's at least a statement from Apple acknowledging the change the device will have on the TV streaming market.
