As fans of the acclaimed series know by now, Jack Bauer will be back for a 12-eipsode miniseries run on Fox. It will take place a few years after the events of the eighth and final season of the show, which ended in 2010. Kiefer Sutherland, the star of the show, will return as agent Jack Bauer along side his partner and second most recurring character, behind Bauer himself, Chloe O'Brien, played by actress Mary Lynn Rajskub.
Although the newest season will only be 12 episodes long, it will retain the same real-time format that made the previous show so pulse-pounding and fast paced. For the uninitiated, 24 centers around the high-stakes adventures of federal agents trying to stop a new terror threat in only 24 hours. Each episode was meant to depict a single hour in one long day of gun battles, bomb diffusions, hostage negotiations and much more.
"When Howard came to us saying he had an idea for a new chapter of '24,' he quite simply had us at 'hello,'" remarked 20th Century Fox Television Chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden in an announcement for the series. "'24' is a signature series for this studio, beloved by critics and audiences worldwide. Howard's idea to revive the franchise as an event series couldn't be timelier, and with the brilliant Kiefer Sutherland on board to reprise his iconic role, we can't wait to get started."
The original series was nominated for 73 Emmy Awards and even won the award for Outstanding Drama Series in 2006. There is no word yet on exactly what role Rajskub will play in the revived story other than that she is reprising her old CTU counter terrorist expert role as Chloe O'Brien.
Sutherland, 46, has been on board to continue playing Jack Bauer for as long as rumors about a revival of the series have been around. First it was going to be a movie and now the new miniseries gives the producer enough of a break to revive the franchise and make it different but not so much of one that the characters have become irrelevant and forgotten.
