TiVO Adds Plex Video Streaming to Its Service

While Netflix and Amazon Prime are slowly eating away at cable's grip on television, the TiVO still has control over a significant portion of the television market.

The TV recording device lets users record their favorite programs and watch them at a later time. However, recent reports revealed that TiVO may enter the streaming media market soon.

The TiVO Roamio box will receive access to Plex's streaming app in early summer.

The Verge describes Plex as "a slick, free option for playing videos, pictures, and music stored a networked computer across your home (an optional premium subscription offers more features). Its apps span all sorts of home theater platforms, from Xbox and Playstation consoles to Rokus, Chromecasts, and myriad smart TVs."

The Plex would also make it a lot easier for TiVO users to access content from non TiVO devices, as well as transfer recordings between devices. TiVO notes in its press release that the Plex app will let users "keep track of personal media by showcasing recently added content front and center," as well as "fling great content from the Plex app on their mobile device to their TiVo devices to watch on the big screen."

But how is this software able to operate inside the TiVO's box?

Tech blogger Dave Zatz discovered that the Plex app will "run within the Opera App Store without OnePass/Search integration." The app will operate in a similar manner to other Plex apps, and will support 720p video at the app's launch. Plex will eventually add 1080p compatibility in the near future.

The Plex app will arrive on the Roamio box on June 8. Users must have a $4.99 Plexpass subscription to use the app.
