It seems that while everyone else was paying close to attention to the machinations of long-time Red Wings head honcho Mike Babcock, Philadelphia Flyers GM Ron Hextall was busy honing in on a coaching candidate with no prior NHL experience whatsoever.
The Flyers and Hextall announced Monday that they had hired former University of North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol as Philadelphia's 19th head coach.
"I am extremely excited to be named the Philadelphia Flyers new head coach," said Hakstol. "Through the process here with Ron [Hextall] and everybody in the Flyers organization I have gained even more of an understanding of the history and tradition of this organization and I'm very proud to become part of the Philadelphia Flyers today."
After relieving last season's head coach, Craig Berube, of his duties at the conclusion of the year, speculation had built that Hextall and the team would likely chase one of the top names set to be available like Babcock, former Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma or former San Jose Sharks head coach Todd McLellan.
Instead, Hextall went with Hakstol, who led North Dakota to the NCAA Tournament in each of his 11 seasons and the Frozen Four seven times, but who has never stood behind the bench at the NHL level.
"Dave brings a wealth of head coaching experience and success to the Philadelphia Flyers organization," said Hextall. "He's a proven winner and we are pleased to have him become part of the Flyers family."
The 46-year-old Hakstol compiled a 260-133-40 record for a .647 winning percentage during his decade-plus at Northa Dakota, per Frank Seravalli of Philly.com.
Hakstol also spent five seasons playing in the IHL from 1991-1996.
According to Craig Custance, Hextall's son Brett played for Hakstol for three seasons at North Dakota.
