Jay Z and Beyoncé have not penned a song about the recent crop of civil rights protests across America or marched on the front lines in Ferguson, Mo., and Baltimore, but they have shown their support in a less public manner.
Activist and writer dream hampton (who spells her name with all lowercase letters) tweeted on Sunday that she reached out to the Carters to help cover the cost of bail for the protesters arrested in Ferguson and Baltimore. They reportedly responded within minutes and wired "tens of thousands" of dollars.
"They're waging war on black resistance in a multitude of ways, many of them financially," hampton tweeted about the mostly peaceful protests. "Protest is literally punished with tariffs."
The power couple also donated money for organizations springing up in Baltimore to support social action plus "more stuff, too much to list," hampton tweeted. Jay Z and Beyonce had asked to keep all donations quiet, but just as hampton began her Twitter "rant," she wrote that she doesn't care if "Jay gets mad."
Jay Z and Beyonce did attend the Rally 4 Peace concert held by Prince in Baltimore on May 11. They also met and posed for pictures with the families of Freddie Gray, who died in Baltimore police custody in April, and Michael Brown, who was shot and killed by police in Ferguson last August.
