Sam Smith went through a very successful laser corrective vocal surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) today, according to the Boston Herald.
The hospital's spokesperson, Michael Morrison, said in a statement: "Sam Smith underwent vocal cord microsurgery by Dr. Steven Zeitels to stop recurrent vocal cord hemorrhage (bleeding). This condition is the result of unstable blood vessels in the vocal cord that can rupture and prevent vocal performance."
Morrison said Zeitels, who is the director of the Voice Center of the hospital, has pioneered many vocal cord surgery procedures for benign and malignant problems, including the use of specialized lasers to stop vocal cord bleeding in singers. Singers Steven Tyler, Lionel Richie and Adele are Zeitels' notable patients.
The 23-year-old British singer had to cancel the remainder of his worldwide tour due to the vocal cord issues.
