Pedialyte's New Target Market: Hung Over Adults?

Pedialyte, an oral electrolyte solution used widely to help hydrate sick children, is being used as a new hang over remedy and the sales potential is not lost on the company.

Producers of the drink have taken note that one-third of its users are adults, an increase in sales in that demographic of 57% since 2012.

"We were looking at what was going on and we want to be part of this," says Lindsy Delco, a spokeswoman for the brand, as quoted by Daily News.

When a child is sick, they loses body fluids and electrolytes, and these are exactly the things that Pedialyte replenishes. It can be consumed as a beverage, an ice pop or bought in a powder packet.

Drinking alcohol sends the body into a similar dehydrated state, and the drink's high levels of sodium and potassium offer the balance that a hung over body needs, relieving heavy drinkers of the headache and uneasy feeling that comes with a hangover.

"See the Lyte" campaign capitalizes on this recent sales trend. To help cater to the growing market for adults, brand owner Abbott Laboratories said they will begin selling larger packs of the powdered version of the drink and will introduce new flavors, including lemonade, strawberry and orange, CBS News reports.
