'Modern Family' Star Ariel Winter Confirms She Will Attend Law School Next Year – But What About Her Acting Career?

Why play a lawyer when you can become one. Ariel Winter, who plays brainy Alex Dunphy on ABC's "Modern Family," revealed her plans to become a lawyer. Winter spoke to E! News during the TV Academy screening of "Modern Family," admitting that she has already "toured schools in California" and will be going on more tours of "East Coast schools."

The 17-year-old actress is expected to graduate from high school next year, according to PEOPLE and said she is most interested in business and law – mostly because they are more stable careers than acting.

So, what will happen to her acting career?

"I would love to continue acting, but it's definitely important, I think, to go and do something else as well," Winter explained. "You never know if something's not going to work out, if one-day acting is like, 'No, we don't like you anymore!' You gotta have something else you can do. I've always been interested in law so I think it'll definitely be something that I'll love to do and also go to school for."

After a long custody battle with her family, Winter announced her emancipation via Twitter, writing, "I am officially emancipated!! I'm really lucky I have an amazing support system and lovely people in my life who have given me the support and guidance to have been given this wonderful opportunity."

Winter has been under the custody of her older sister, Shanelle Gray, since 2012. This was after the Department of Children and Family Services found evidence that the actress' mother, Chrisoula Workman, emotionally and physically abused her.
