The Philippines might have acquired almost one hundred container vans of trash coming from Canada, according to Rappler.
The Bureau of Customs (BOC) have stumbled upon 48 other container vans that were found at the Manila International Container Port (MICP) coming from a company where its headquarters is located in Ontario, Canada.
BOC documents reveal that Live Green Enterprise may have dispatched in four batches waste plastic materials to Manila from December 2013 up to January 2014. However, a representative has come forward saying that these container vans have yet to be inspected.
The Auction & Cargo Disposal Division chief of the MICP has signed a letter that proposes the "issuance of decree of abandonment" for the said container vans. This comes after President Benigno Aquino III said that the government was in anticipation of a court approval that would allow for the discarding of the other 50 container vans that arrived before the 48.
Meanwhile, numerous environmentalists have expressed their outrage over the situation, imploring President Aquino to not let the country turn into a dumpsite, Interaksyon has reported.
The situation has prompted several environmental groups to launch campaigns in order to pressure Canada into getting back their trash. They have even encouraged the president to bring up the matter on his trip to Canada, but nothing came to fruition.
