U.S. Says It Will Announce If Obama Decides to Cancel Meeting With Putin

White House officials said that an announcement will be made if President Barack Obama decides to cancel the scheduled meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

An increasing number of U.S. officials including some congressional leaders are urging the U.S. president to cancel the one-on-one meeting with the Russian president following Moscow's asylum provision to the American whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Jay Carney, White House spokesman, said that President Obama will travel to St. Petersburg for the scheduled G 20 summit next month but it is yet not decided if he will cancel a scheduled stop in Moscow for a one-on-one meeting with President Putin ahead of the G 20 meeting.

The Obama administration had strongly warned Russia against offering asylum to the American whistleblower.

Despite Washington's request to extradite Snowden back to the United States, the Moscow government offered him a year-long asylum in the country.

Snowden's revelations of U.S. National Security Agency's surveillance programs of monitoring communications and movements of people have affected almost all the countries including several of the American allies such as Germany and the U.K.

Germany recently announced the cancellation of a spy pact with the United State and the United Kingdom in response to Snowden's revelations about the U.S. National Security Agency's surveillance program.

The Berlin government was forced to end the Cold War-era pact with two of its allies after Snowden's revelations sparked widespread outrage in the country, where elections are due next month.

"The cancellation of the administrative agreements, which we have pushed for in recent weeks, is a necessary and proper consequence of the recent debate about protecting personal privacy," said German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle in a statement.

The cancellation is largely symbolic as the pact dates back to 1968-69.

Snowden is planning to travel to a Latin American country after spending some months in Russia.
