A 46-year-old man in Milwaukee, Wis. was declared dead by the first medical responders that arrived at his apartment Tuesday, where he was found cold and lying on the foot of his bed.
The man's family was notified of the incident at 2:20 p.m., but at 2:54 p.m., while he was about to be transported to the morgue, he started to breathe again and move his right arm and leg, ABC News reported.
The man, who's name has not been made public, has been under treatment for a thyroid problem, hence, after not hearing from him for a time, his girlfriend called local police to check on him.
The firefighters found him "cold to the touch and in rigor" before pronouncing his death and calling for the medical examiner to do the transport. ABC News noted that they "did not attempt to resuscitate him."
The first responders called 911, and he was hurried to Columbia-St. Mary's Hospital, where he remains to date in the Intensive Care Unit.
There were no signs of street drug use or alcohol abuse, and his brother explained that his thyroid problem sent him in a rare coma that also caused his temperature to drop to 84 degrees, WISN reported.
The Milwaukee Fire Department is currently conducting an internal investigation to see if protocol was followed by the first responders in hopes of reaching a conclusion about the false call of death on the victim.
