After being unemployed all of last season, quarterback Vince Young on Tuesday signed with the Green Bay Packers. The signing comes one day after Young worked out for the team, NFL.com reports.
Green Bay announced on Tuesday the acquisition of Young, who signed a one-year contract. He's expected to attend the Packers' quarterback meeting Monday night.
Young's signing gives the team a more dependable backup signal caller than Graham Harrell and B.J. Coleman. The 30-year-old also gives the defense a more mobile quarterback to practice against, which is especially useful given the Packers' opening schedule: the San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins.
Young's "impressive" workout with Green Bay earned him a shot to compete for the backup position, according to ESPN. After a year hiatus from the league, Young is excited about the opportunity to suit up again.
"Vince is ecstatic and looking forward to the opportunity," a source told ESPN. "He was hoping to participate in the team's quarterback meeting today."
The Tennessee Titans drafted Young in 2006 as the third overall pick. After spending five years in Tennessee, Young signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2010 to play as a backup to Michael Vick. Young then signed with the Buffalo Bills in 2011, but was cut during preseason after losing the backup job to Tyler Thigpen.
In his career, he's passed for 8,964 yards, 46 touchdowns and 51 interceptions; he's rushed for 1,459 yards and 12 touchdowns.
