Nine Brains Found Near New York Railroad Tracks

Nine brains were found on a street near railroad tracks in Governeur, a northern New York state village that has got everyone scratching their heads.

Authorities said there is nothing to fear, reported the New York Post. The brains were believed to be part of a collection for educational or research purposes and there is no criminal activity suspected.

Dr. Tim Monroe, a local veterinarian, determined one of the brains had been professionally removed and preserved in formaldehyde and that the brains are believed to be from either dogs or sheep.

"We measured and weighed the specimen. It comes out to about 70 grams, which would be consistent with a dog-sized brain," Monroe told 7 news.

Meanwhile, Alisa Woods, an assistant professor of chemistry and biomolecular science at Clarkson University, told North Country Now that the brains may have come from sheep, which are commonly used in dissection laboratories.

Another mishap with preserved brains happened last year when the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, said that dozens of human brains stored in jars of formaldehyde were reported missing and were actually destroyed in 2002. The brains had been used for teaching and research.
