The Assam government is planning to develop 22 gulf courses across the state and set up a golf circuit, according to PTI report.
"We have 22 golf courses, which is a big number," Anurag Singh, Managing Director, Assam Tourism Department, was quoted as saying in a PTI report. "The golf courses are located mostly in tea gardens. So, we want to have a tie-up with the tea garden owners."
Assam, a northeastern state in India, is known for its tea and has the oldest tea plantation estates. Singh said his team have conducted a study with a consultant specialized in golf courses and also had a discussion with tea garden owners and made some preliminary plans.
"The consultant has given a suggestion that we need to go in for some kind of public-private partnership with the tea garden owners under a revenue sharing model," he said.
Singh was disappointed by the golf courses lack of maintenance for decades. According to the proposal, the state government and the tourism department will invest in the development of the golf courses and the tea garden owners will take care of the maintenance.
Singh also said that the plan has already started by setting up a new golf course at Chandrapur, near Guwahti, according to PTI report.
