Alyssa Ramirez, the homecoming queen at her school prom, was en route to her house when she was killed by floodwaters in Devine, Texas, located approximately 35 miles southwest of San Antonio.
The 18-year-old, who was not only a cheerleader but also the student council president and an amazing athlete on the school's volleyball and tennis team, spent Saturday evening at her senior prom. While returning back home from the event, floodwaters swept her car off the road, leaving the teenager stranded in high water, desperately calling for help before she was overwhelmed, her family members told local news stations, New York Daily News reported.
There were no barricades on the road, and Ramirez's car stalled out in the high water a few miles from her home, Roberta Ramirez, Alyssa's aunt, told the station.
"She did the right things," Roberta Ramirez said. "She called 911. She called her father, but it was just too much and too quick," according to a San Antonio news channel.
Furthermore, Roberta said that Alyssa's parents tried looking for her but couldn't as the powerful flood had already swept away the car. Search and rescue teams were unable to find Alyssa until morning. They eventually found the vehicle, which was not very far away.
Ramirez is one of six victims that have lost their lives across Texas and neighboring Oklahoma over the past few days as heavy rainfall and floods have affected both states, according to CNN.
