Major smartphone producers seem to be gearing up for the wrist battle. Days ago, Apple announced that it’s working on a new device which will go with an iPhone and display notifications on the wearable device. Apple branded it as “iWatch” in July and Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, has described the wrist gadget as a fascinating “space.”
With the Samsung’s Galaxy Gear, a "wearable digital electronic device in the form of a wristwatch," Samsung appears to have joined into the smartwatch ring along with Microsoft, Google and Apple.
The electronics company, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., filed for a U.S. trademark last month and earlier this year for patents for the wristwatch device with the Korean Intellectual Property Office.
Samsung’s Galaxy Gear has been in progress for a while. Last March, Samsung’s executive vice president Lee Young Hee said, "We've been preparing the watch product for so long."
However, it is not Samsung’s initial venture into the watch market. In 1999, SPH-WP10 was launched and in 2009, S9110 was released.
The gadget proffers incoming and outgoing calls and Internet and e-mail access, according to the trademark application. Move, a Korean blog, posted several of the patents’ technical drawings.
More than willingly to stand alone, the Samsung Galaxy Gear is anticipated to serve as a buddy device to the Galaxy S tablets and Smartphones. In contrast to Pebble's smartwatch, that works with both Android and iOS devices through its app, the Samsung’s Galaxy Gear will possibly work with Android.
While no official release date yet that has been divulged for Samsung's Galaxy Gear, news say that the watch will debut on Sept. 4 at a Samsung event in Berlin. Samsung is also likely to show the upcoming version of its tablet, the Galaxy Note III, at the Berlin event.
