Actor and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Sam Shepard was arrested on Monday for suspicion of drunk driving, Fox 411 reports.
Security at La Choza, a restaurant in downtown Santa Fe, N.M. complained about a possible drunk driver leaving their restaurant. They were concerned about Shepherd, who was trying to leave the establishment in a pickup truck with the emergency break still engaged. The police were called to the scene at around 7:45 p.m.
"He told a police officer that he had two tequila drinks and was planning to drive home," Santa Fe police Lt. Andrea Dobyns said. "Our officer could smell alcohol on his breath, and he had bloodshot, watery eyes."
Dobyns went on to say that Shepard failed a field sobriety test and was arrested outside of the restaurant after he declined to take a breathalyzer test.
NBC News reports that online records state the 70-year-old was booked into the Santa Fe County Jail on a charge of aggravated driving while intoxicated. The records also show that he spent the night in jail.
Shepard will be arraigned in Santa Fe Magisratet Court on Tuesday. This is the second time the actor has been caught driving drunk, according to The Inquistr. Back in 2009, he was arrested, and plead guilty, for speeding while driving drunk in Illinois.
