Korean newspapers are currently complaining about how the Japanese poster for "Terminator Genysis" doesn't feature Korean actor Byung-Hun Lee.
Paramount recently released a new poster for the upcoming entry in the "Terminator" series. While the poster is well-designed and reflects the film's interest, it is lacking one thing: the film's core Korean actor.
Korean English language newspaper The Korean Times reported reported the following:
A Japanese poster for the upcoming Hollywood action blockbuster "Terminator: Genisys" has omitted Korean actor Byung-hun Lee, who has a supporting role in the film.
The poster shows the main cast, including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke and Jai Courtney - but not Lee, who plays a terminator cyborg T-1000.
Why Japan has omitted Lee is a mystery. In 2013, Japan featured him on a poster for the Hollywood action movie "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," in which the actor, 44, played ninja bodyguard Storm Shadow. Lee and American action star Bruce Willis were on the poster...
While this sounds like a valid critique (especially since he plays the T-1000, a key villain in the film), Kotaku notes that this complaint is inaccurate, especially when one considers that most of the "Terminator Genisys" posters don't feature Mr. Lee.
Why is the South Korean media hooking onto this story, then? Kotaku suspects that the poster is reflective of current national tension between South Korea and Japan. "Yes, there's tension between South Korea and Japan, but honestly, the Korean media latching onto stories like this isn't doing anything to help mend those tensions, especially when Byung-hun Lee doesn't appear on the Korean poster, either. Talk about curious and disappointing."
"Terminator Genisys" will arrive in U.S. theatres on July 1.
