CNN reported based on a source close to the investigation that remains found at the home of suspected murder and kidnapper James DiMaggio are consistent with those of an 8-year-old boy, prompting concern for missing 8-year-old Ethan Anderson.
Police are currently awaiting DNA results to identify the remains.
An Amber Alert was issued statewide Tuesday in California after Hannah Anderson, 16 and her brother Ethan were missing just a day after their mother, Christina Anderson, was murdered.
Officials found the mother's body on Sunday night in the burning rubble of DiMaggio's house and garage in Boulevard in eastern San Diego County. The two were believed to be taken the day before around 5 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol website.
"Jim, I can't fathom what you were thinking. The damage is done. I'm begging you to let my daughter go. You've taken everything else," said Brett Anderson, the children's father, in a public plea to DiMaggio.
Brett also had a message for his daugther, telling her "We all love you very much. If you have a chance, you take it, you run. You'll be found," he said.
Reporters noted he did not mention his son which cued one to ask San Diego Sheriff's Department Lt. Glenn Giannantonio if the father knew whether or not the remains found in the house were his son's.
"We don't know who that is that was found in the rubble. It is a possibility that it's Ethan," Giannantonio said. "It's a possibility that's another child that we haven't identified yet, or don't realize is missing yet. Right now, we just don't know, and we're praying that it wasn't Ethan."
The FBI is assisting with the investigation. Anybody with information on this case should call the homicide detail at (858) 974 - 2321or (858) 565 - 5200, or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580 -8477.
