Jeffrey Dean Morgan chose a non-conventional diet to lose weight for his latest role in the History miniseries "Texas Rising."
Morgan lost 40 pounds consuming only a can of tuna fish a day. His character 'Deaf' Smith, a Texas Ranger helping to lead the revolution, suffered from consumption, the disease now known as tuberculosis.
"I got there and I was about 175. I left and I was 135," Morgan told Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford on Today on May 21. "I did it in the most unhealthy way possible. I didn't consult with a doctor."
He originally planned to only lose 10 pounds, but continued dropping the weight throughout production. Morgan joked that he never wants to see a can of tuna ever again.
"Texas Rising" airs on Mondays at 9 p.m. on History.
The former "Grey's Anatomy" star will also play Joe DiMaggio in the two-night Lifetime miniseries, "The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe," which starts on Saturday, May 30 at 8 p.m.
