The genius behind the Doom and the Quake series, John Carmack, has joined Oculus, manufacturer of virtual-reality headsets for immersive gaming. Carmack has not ditched his co-founded company id Software. Oculus officially announced Carmack as the chief technology officer of the company, Wednesday, in the company's press release.
Carmack played a major role in the development of the Oculus Rift, virtual reality headset for 3D gaming. He worked with the team earlier during its initial stages, even before it was launched on Kickstarter campaign in August last year. Carmack was the developer who integrated Rift in to a game, when the device was just a prototype without its software kit.
Not only the Oculus team is excited about his joining the team, Carmack also expressed his enthusiasm about joining the company in a note he wrote for the Oculus community.
"I have fond memories of the development work that led to a lot of great things in modern gaming - the intensity of the first person experience, LAN and internet play, game mods, and so on. Duct taping a strap and hot gluing sensors onto Palmer's early prototype Rift and writing the code to drive it ranks right up there. Now is a special time," Carmack wrote in the Oculus press release. "I believe that VR will have a huge impact in the coming years, but everyone working today is a pioneer. The paradigms that everyone will take for granted in the future are being figured out today; probably by people reading this message. It's certainly not there yet. There is a lot more work to do, and there are problems we don't even know about that will need to be solved, but I am eager to work on them. It's going to be awesome!"
Carmack will be working at the Dallas office, which is yet to open. The company also announced limited openings for its new office.
On completing one year on Kickstarter, Oculus Rift has raised nearly $2.5 million from 9,500 Kickstarters. The company also plans to launch full production by early next year.
