Can you smell the hate! During the 2015 Billboard Music Awards, rapper Iggy Azalea took home the awards for Top Streaming Artist, Top Rap Artist and Top Rap Song for her song "Fancy" with singer Charli XCX.
The "Black Widow" performer beat out Big Sean, Nicki Minaj and Bobby Shurmda for Top Rap Song - but not everyone was excited about Azalea's win.
Tennessee resident Christian Ferguson launched a Change.org petition last week to have the 24-year-old Australian rapper stripped of her award for Top Rap Song. Ferguson is claiming that Azalea is ineligible for the award because the song was released last February.
"The eligibility time period for nominations is March 10th, 2014 through March 2015," the petition reads. "'Fancy' was released on February 17th, 2014, nearly a month before the eligibility starting. This is unfair to the other nominees in these categories, especially to 'Anaconda' by Nicki Minaj, who most likely would've won. Billboard did not follow their own guidelines and should have to recalculate these nominations without 'Fancy' as a nominee."
As of Friday, the petition titled "Retract Iggy Azalea's Ineligible Award for 'Fancy,'" has racked up more than 2,000 signatures. On the website, Ferguson boasted that his petition received 5,000 signatures in one day.
Despite Ferguson's efforts for change, a representative for the Billboard Music Awards' production company, Dick Clark Productions, said the song "was eligible" for the award and met the award qualifications.
"To everyone who signed the petition to retract Iggy's Billboard Music Award, thank you first and foremost; however, a spokesperson for Dick Clark Productions, who produces the award show, has said that the award is still Iggy's," the statement read.
"We got to nearly 20,000 signatures, which is freaking insane. I think Nicki possibly saw the petition, and MTV even wrote an article about it! Thank you for all the all the support! Let's make sure Nicki rightfully takes what's hers home next year by requesting radio stations to play 'Hey Mama' and 'The Night Is Still Young', as well as purchasing them both on iTunes if you haven't already!"
Azalea has yet to comment on the petition.
