"Tron" fans won't be happy to hear that a third installment in the franchise is not happening.
Disney has pulled the plug on the sci-fi sequel due to the studio's crowded schedule, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Disney studios reportedly could not find a spot for "Tron 3" on its crowded slate, mainly because it is currently developing several projects, including "Beauty and the Beast" set to release in 2017, "Jungle Book," another "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie, "Alice in Wonderland," and Tim Burton's "Dumbo."
Rumors spread last March about Disney planning to begin production this fall in Vancouver. While the movie has never officially been announced, it was rumored that "Tron: Legacy" director Joseph Kosinki would return to direct the new film, and actors Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde would reprise their roles as Sam Flynn and Quorra.
"We had never greenlit the movie, but it was in development for some time," one of Disney's executives said while discussing the unfortunate decision for the project, Variety reported. "Things in the queue got ahead of it and we have such a big slate out in front of it, we started to think, 'Where does it go?' And it's a pretty big investment to make if you are not even sure when you are going to release it."
The Hollywood Reporter also claimed that "Disney had been interested in adding Jared Leto to the cast, but an offer and negotiations had never commenced." Leto is currently shooting "Suicide Squad."
"I think it could resurface at some point, but it's not going to get the go button right now," another individual familiar with the project said.
Disney has reportedly been trying to develop a sequel to "Tron: Legacy" since the film was released in 2010 and grossed nearly $400 million worldwide at the box office on a $170 million budget.
The 1982 original film focused on the life of a computer hacker who is drawn into a digital universe. It starred Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, and Cindy Morgan.
