Ahead of the United Nations climate change talks in Paris in December Ben & Jerry has released its newest flavor that should help spark climate change interest from consumers. The new flavor, called Save Our Swirled or SOS, is concocted as a raspberry ice cream filled with swirls and marshmallows and added with dark and white fudge ice cream cones.
"We created a flavor to bring attention to this historic issue and to send out our own SOS for our planet," company reps said, promising that SOS is "unlike any Ben & Jerry's flavor before it."
The new ice cream flavor carries a simple message that the company wants to impart about climate change: "If it's melted, it's ruined!" as stated on their site. The push is part of a "larger, global campaign," as its Social Mission Activism Manager, Chris Miller, told Think Progress.
"The place where we interact with our consumers most is in the freezercase," said Miller in the interview.
"2015 is a really important point in the race to combat climate change. We have a rapidly closing window...this is our last chance of keeping global warming below 2°," added Miller.
Global warming's limit has been pegged at 2° and the goal of the ice cream maker is to make sure that world leaders will be able to come up with goals so that this is maintained, if not improved.
To illustrate their point better, Ben & Jerry's also released a video to launch SOS and encourage consumers to join the climate movement. The company has, in fact, partnered with Avaaz, an eco-activist group, for this endeavor. A portion of the proceeds with every SOS purchase will help fund the organization.
The new flavor was introduced in stores in the United States last week and will also be available in the markets in Europe this summer. Asian and Australian sites where Ben & Jerry's is available, will be able to enjoy SOS later in the year.
