Body Found in Suitcase Inside Tokyo Train Station Locker

The body of an elderly woman was discovered on Sunday in a suitcase that was left abandoned inside a coin-operated locker for over a month at one of Tokyo's main train stations.

The suitcase had been left unclaimed at Toyko Station and was therefore moved to a temporary storage room on April 26, according to BBC.

"There was an abnormal odor when we opened the suitcase," an unidentified worker told The Guardian. "Then we saw hair."

The victim was somewhere between 70 and 90 years old, and was just over 4 feet 7 inches tall. She was folded into a bright yellow suitcase which measured approximately 28 by 20 by 10 inches.

Police officials said the identity of the victim is still unknown and that they are investigating the cause of her death. Additionally, authorities are looking through footage from CCTV cameras across the station in order to establish who left the suitcase in the locker, according to BBC.

Tokyo Station is one the busiest stations in all of Japan, handling about 150 million passengers every year, according to JR East, a representative of a regional train company.
