At least 30 troops in western Anbar province were killed in multiple Islamic State suicide attacks that targeted a police base, AP reported.
Three suicide bombers simultaneously drove their Humvees that were taken from the Iraq army into an ammunition depot of a police base in the Tharthar area causing a large explosion.
Some Shiite militiamen were also stationed in the area, and 40 troops were wounded in the attack, police said.
Casualties were confirmed by hospital officials, but identities were kept private.
According to BBC News, many senior officers were killed and the commander of the 9th Brigade, Brig Gen Moussa Haider, was among those that were wounded.
Said attacks occurred while the Iraqi security forces were battling IS militants in Anbar province to reclaim Ramadi and other areas that were taken over by the militant group.
