Actress Leah Remini has filed a missing persons report for Scientology leader David Miscavige's wife. The "King of Queens" star left the Church last month citing it as "corrupt."
A police source confirmed to People magazine that Remini did in fact file the report earlier in the week but LAPD has classified the document as "unfounded" and said that they saw Shelly Miscavige themselves.
"The LAPD has classified the report as unfounded, indicating that Shelly is not missing," Detective Gus Villanueva told E! News.
According to several reports, Scientology members have been worried about Shelly who has reportedly not been seen in public in six years. Remini thought it was odd that the Church leader's wife didn't attend the wedding of Kate Holmes and Tom Cruise in 2006. Not only is Cruise a long-time and well-respected member of the Church, he is good friends with David and reportedly the leader served as best man in the wedding.
The Church has denied that Shelly was ever missing and issued a statement to People magazine about Remini's missing persons reports.
"This ill-advised, ludicrous self-promotion and the media inquiries it generated caused an inexcusable distraction for the LAPD in an era when the time and resources of its officers are stretched thin each day," the statement read. "Creating this unnecessary burden for law enforcement was even more irresponsible given the entire episode, anti-religious zealots who blog on the fringe of the Internet. Sadly, rather than move on with her life and career, Ms. Remini has aligned herself with a handful of untrustworthy, lunatic tabloid sources who obsessively harass the Church to advance their selfish agendas."
According to Tony Ortega, a former Village Voice editor who now writes for Scientology blog The Underground Bunker, Shelly was allegedly transferred from Scientology's main headquarters near Hemet, Calif. to a secret compound.
Shelly was reportedly moved to the compound, known as the Church of Spiritual Technology, around 2005 or 2006. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the compound is a place where dozens of Scientology members go "who are said to be completely cut off from the outside world."
The actress hasn't said exactly why she decided to leave the Church after being a member for since the 1970s but told People that "no one is going to tell me how I need to think, no one is going to tell me who I can, and cannot, talk to."
Earlier in the month, reports surfaced that Remini is planning on writing a memoir about her experiences as a Scientology member.
