Fans can get very creative when jeering an opposing team. Whether it’s a peculiar sign, a funny chant or a weird costume, it’s nice to see those in attendance stray from the traditional “boo” from time to time. In Wednesday night’s game between the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians fans tried a different type of chant. However, this jeer wasn’t directed at the team, a specific player of even the manager, according to ForTheWin.
Take a listen below.
Yup, the Indians fans began to attack the entire city of the Detroit. In the top of the ninth inning in a tied game, fans were chanting “Detroit’s bankrupt!!”
The chant refers to the recent financial struggles the city of Detroit is facing. Michigan governor Rick Snyder said the city had no choice but to file for bankruptcy according to USA Today.
"It is clear that the financial emergency in Detroit cannot be successfully addressed outside of such a filing, and it is the only reasonable alternative that is available," Snyder explained through an approval letter required by the state. "In other words, the City's financial emergency cannot be satisfactorily rectified in a reasonable period of time absent this filing."
Although the Motor City apparently has some pretty big issues to deal with, one minor area they don’t have to worry about is their baseball team. The Tigers are currently first in the AL Central (leading the Indians by seven games) and are on a 12-game winning streak. Also, they have the favorites to win the AL MVP award in third baseman Miguel Cabrera (.359 BA, 33 HR and 105 RBIs) and the AL Cy Young award in starting pitcher Max Scherzer (17-1, 2.84 ERA and 175 SO).
Oh and if you’re wondering, with all the chanting Indians fans were doing Wednesday night, the Tigers still won the game 6-5.
