Despite having one of the best hitters in the MLB, the Seattle Mariners' offense ranks 28th in the league with 192 runs scored. General manager Jack Zduriencik executed a trade on Wednesday in hopes of providing a boost for the struggling unit.
The Mariners acquired outfielder Mark Trumbo from the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal. Arizona also sent left-hander Vidal Nuno to Seattle in exchange for catcher Welington Castillo, right-hander Dominic Leone, infielder Jack Reinheimer and outfielder Gabby Guerrero.
Seattle flipped Castillo less than three weeks after acquiring him from the Chicago Cubs. Arizona traded Trumbo because they needed to make room in the outfield for Yasmany Tomas as they wait for third baseman Jake Lamb to come off the disabled list next week. They also needed a catcher after Tuffy Gosewisch was lost for the season with a torn ACL.
Trumbo will now add power to a lineup that consists of Nelson Cruz, Robinson Cano and Kyle Seager. The 29-year-old was batting .259/.299/.506 with 23 runs scored, 9 home runs and 23 RBIs in 46 games with the D-Backs before the trade. He'll now head back to the AL West, where he was once a member of the Los Angeles Angels from 2010-2013.
"He's one of my favorite players," Diamondbacks' general manager Dave Stewart told Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. "It was a tough decision, but Seattle expressed interest in him and they've repeatedly expressed interest in him, and sometimes you get to the point where the timing was just right and today is the day."
Trumbo is signed for $6.9 million this season and will enter his third and final year of arbitration in the offseason, so the Mariners have him under club control until 2017.
