A lot of people don’t like the smell of smoke in their hair, skin, or clothes and they might just have men their superhero. Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City is proposing to limit not only the use of cigarettes – but also the use of E-cigarettes as well.
The drafts of three tobacco-related bills that will soon be voted on by the New York City Council were exposed. In the said drafts, “tobacco products”, under the city law, would be redefined to include “e-cigarettes and related components, parts and accessories.” And the display of these things -- e-cigarettes and related components, parts and accessories – will not be allowed on retail stores, if the regulations pass.
Another thing is, even though e-cigarettes with tobacco and menthol flavors can still be bought in retail stores, the rest of the flavored e-cigarettes can only be obtained and purchased in age-restricted “tobacco bars.” However, retailers shouldn’t feel bad, because New York City Council restricts the selling of “tobacco bars” put up and established after December 31, 2001.
As drafted by the Health Department as per request of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the original version of the bill did not take account of any position on e- cigarettes. Raising the legal age of tobacco purchasers to 2, banning the display of cigarette advertisements in stores and raising the price floor for cigarettes packages are some of the changes included in the new bill.
The CASAA or Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association disclosed the documents. CASAA is an advocacy group created to raise awareness and protect rights to gain entry to reduced harm alternatives. They stand by their belief that e-cigarettes have helped a lot of adult smokers before to cease smoking by switching to less harmful substitutes and are way less dangerous than ordinary cigarettes.
