San Antonio Spurs swingman Marco Belinelli doesn't sound sold on re-signing with the team in free agency. Denver Nuggets guard Jameer Nelson, meanwhile, reportedly plans to opt out of his contract and to test the market in July.
Belinelli will become a free agent this summer after spending the last two seasons in San Antonio, and he recently indicated he's not a lock to re-sign for next season.
"From July 1 I will have the chance to choose my future," he told Sportando. "I may return to the Spurs, obviously considering their economic proposal. There are chances for me to re-sign with the Spurs. There will be also the possibility to move to another team. As I've always said, San Antonio is a very strong team. An incredible organization. The best I've played for in the NBA. The free agency opens on July 1, we'll see what happens. I think I will know my future the 1st or the 2nd week of July."
Belinelli will likely examine his options in free agency, but the biggest question is whether the Spurs will even try to bring him back. He averaged a productive 9.2 points off the bench this season, but San Antonio will be tight on cap space in July. The team has a number of other free agents it must address in the offseason, including Kawhi Leonard, Danny Green, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili. It's possible Duncan and Ginobili end up retiring, but San Antonio also has been linked to a handful of big-name outside free agents - such as Marc Gasol, LaMarcus Aldridge, DeAndre Jordan and Greg Monroe - that would require a huge chunk of cap space to sign.
Nelson, on the other hand, reportedly has already made up his mind to find a new team in free agency. The veteran point guard plans to opt out of his $2.8 million player option this summer in order to leave Denver, according to RealGM. Nelson, 33, likely wants to play for a competitive team - Denver seems headed for a rebuild this summer - before age completely catches up to him.
