Tiger Woods winless streak at the majors continued over the weekend after he tied for 40th at the 2013 PGA Championship. Despite being more than five years removed from his last major victory, Woods remained optimistic about his chances to break Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 major wins, USA Today Sports reports.
Eighteen is the magic number. Nicklaus owns the record for most majors won with 18, and Woods, with 14, sits in second place. Woods has a shot to supplant the golf legend, but the 37-year-old hasn't won once in his last 18 appearances at majors.
His last major won was the 2008 U.S. Open. Despite the five-year drought, Woods isn't too worried.
"Is it concerning? No," Woods told USA Today Sports. "I've been there in half of them. So that's about right. If you are going to be there three-quarters or half of them with a chance to win on the back nine, you have just got to get it done."
"I was right there and certainly had a chance to win the Masters and the British this year. The other two, I just didn't hit it good enough. Just the way it goes."
As for his performance over the weekend, Woods attributed it to his swing.
"Well, I put four good rounds together last week, unfortunately it wasn't this week," Woods said, referring to his win last week at WGC-Bridgestone. "Didn't seem to hit it as good and didn't make any putts until the last few holes today. But I didn't give myself many looks and certainly didn't hit the ball good enough to be in it.
"... Having a chance on the back nine on Sunday, I can live with that. It's always frustrating going out there, and I'm 3 over today, got to 7 (over), and I'm grinding my tail off coming in just to shoot even par for the day. And I'm nowhere in it. That's tough."
Wood's next opportunity to win his 15th major is next April at the Masters.
