An eight-year-old African boy that was smuggled inside a suitcase at a Spanish border crossing will be reunited with his mother as DNA tests proved their maternal relationship, according to the Agence France Presse.
The boy, Adou Ouattara, stayed at a centre for underage migrants in Ceuta, after he was discovered by the police curled up and covered in a suitcase without airvents on May 7.
The suitcase was brought by a 19-year-old woman, whose identity was kept private. The boy's father, Ali Ouattara, was arrested and charged with human rights abuse who was pointed as the one responsible for the incident.
Juan Isidro Fernandez Diaz, the family's lawyer, said that they will be able to get Adou on Monday, according to AFP.
Adou was given authorization to live in Spain for one year. His mother, Lucie Ouattara, lives legally in Spain's Canary Islands off the Moroccan coast who moved in the area to live with his father.
When Lucie transferred to Spain, she only brought her 11-year-old daughter and left Adou behind with his grandmother and brother in Assuefry, Ivory Coast.
After the death of his grandmother in 2014, Ali requested a residency permit in Spain for Adou but was rejected because he earns less than 1,333 euros, which is required by law.
Thousands of migrants risk their lives every year trying to enter Ceuta and Melilla by climbing over the seven-meter (23-foot) fences that define the borders of Spain and Morocco. Others would smuggle themselves in hidden cargoes and vehicles, or they would swim or sail from shores towards the other side.
