Scientists identified a new dinosaur that lived around 70 million years ago called the "Hellboy," named after the horned comic book character, reported Discovery News.
The dinosaur resembles the Triceratops, which is a close relative to Regaliceratops peterhewsi, but it has some differences with the latter.
Its bones were found by Peter Hews near a river in southeastern Alberta, Canada, 10 years ago. The fossils were excavated and studied by researchers leading to the discovery of a new species.
"Once it was prepared, it was obviously a new species, and an unexpected one at that. Many horned-dinosaur researchers who visited the museum did a double take when they first saw it in the laboratory," said Caleb Brown of the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology in Alberta in a statement.
The newly identified dinosaur is both a Chasmosaurines and Centrosaurines since it has a small horn above the nose and larger horns over the eyes, as well as a large horn over the nose and smaller "eye horns."
Regaliceratops size is similar to the largest rhinos today, which is 16 feet (5 meters) long, 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall at the hips, weighing about 1.5 tons, iO9 reported.
While Triceratops use their horns to fight, Hellboy's horns are merely for mating display and are useless for defense.
The discovery of this new species is evidence that there are still more undiscovered species in North America, reported Smithsonian Magazine.
