Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Cary Williams had choice words for both his team and the New England Patriots. Williams accused the Patriots of "dirty plays" during their joint practice last week, and he said the Eagles defense needs to get tougher.
Williams was benched in the joint Eagles-Patriots practice last week after getting into a tussle with receiver Aaron Dobson, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. He accused the Patriots of playing dirty during the practice and felt their attitude warranted him to do something.
"They came in there talking," Williams told the Inquirer on Sunday. "They had a lot of jokes, and ... laughs, a lot of dirty plays that were going on. So there was a reason behind what I did, there was a reason behind the madness."
Williams also pointed out his former team, the Baltimore Ravens, would've never let the Patriots get away with that.
"At the end of the day, I've still got to do things the way Coach (Chip Kelly) wants me to do it, and I understand that," Williams said. "But it definitely would have been a different situation if it was in Baltimore. It wouldn't have been a fun practice for the Patriots, I can tell you that."
As for his new team, Williams wants his defense to get tougher and become feared in the NFL.
"I feel like we've got to establish a tenacity, a tough-nosed defense, a hard-nosed defense, something that's to be feared when it comes out to each and every week," Williams said. "Brian Dawkins alluded to it a couple of times when I spoke to him. He was talking about bringing that fear back here.
"Right now, I don't know if there's anybody out there that fears this defense, especially after last week."
The Eagles lost their preseason game on Friday to the Patriots, 31-22. New England's running game looked uncontainable against Philadelphia's defense - Stevan Ridley ran for a 62-yard gain, and LaGarrette Blount had a 51-yard touchdown run.
Philadelphia's next preseason game is against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, Aug. 15.
