Two nuns, aged 58 and 68 from Ireland and New Zealand, were trapped at the Casa Suore in Mariste, Rome for three days and were rescued from a lift, BBC News reported.
The pair survived three days without food and water when they were confined in the elevator after an electrical power failure.
According to The Local, the nuns drank their own urine in order to survive.
No one heard their call for help since the building was empty and they did not have their mobile phones with them, Il Messagero reported.
When the cleaner could not get access to the convent and no one replied when he rang the bell, he called the police for help. The convent is a half an hour walk from the Vatican.
The police came to rescue the nuns who responded to the call.
"Yes, we are here, in the elevator," they said.
They were brought to the hospital since they were already dehydrated especially since the temperature was very hot.
Both were guests in the Marist Sister House, and the two were praying hard to be rescued all weekend.
