European Capitals Culture will be adding two new cities Marseilles (France) and Kosice (Slovakia) on January 12 and 19, respectively, according to Breaking Travel News.
The two cities will feature an unforgettable launch according to Androulla Vassiliou, European commissioner for education, culture, multilingualism and youth.
"This is the moment that Marseille and Kosice have been preparing for - and waiting for - since their selection as the 2013 European Capitals of Culture," he said, according to Breaking Travel News. "I'm sure the public will be treated to an unforgettable launch in both cities. The opening events will mark the beginning of what will be a tremendous year of cultural activities, aimed not only at local people from the city and surrounding region, but also at those coming from much further afield."
The inauguration of Marseille-Provence 2013 is scheduled for Jan. 12 and 13, which will include a public ceremony and the guest of honor being the European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. A contemporary art exhibition in Aix-en-Provence will also be a part of the launch. Further a treasure hunt and fireworks display in Arles will entertain the guests.
On the other hand, Kasice will be inaugurated in the presence of commissioner Vassiliou at different locations including the Podium, the Steel Arena, the State Theatre, and various clubs and restaurants on Jan. 19 and 20.
"The European Capital of Culture has been a fantastic EU success story for more than 25 years: the title is a unique opportunity to boost a city's cultural vibrancy and long-term development, as well as being hugely important for tourism, job creation and urban regeneration," Vassiliou said. "I wish both 2013 Capitals of Culture every success!"
