About 2,200 baby pigs were set loose on an Ohio highway when the semitrailer they were in overturned on Monday, reported the Washington Post.
More than two hours after the accident, which took place on State Route 35 in Xenia Township near Dayton, 15 local police and fire agencies were still catching piglets, reported the AP.
According to Deputy Chief Greg Beegle of the township's fire department, some of the pigs ran into wooded areas and they couldn't find all of them. Around 1,100 were taken to Greene County Fairgrounds and are waiting to be transported.
The rescued pigs were caught by holding them by their hind legs and transferring them to another truck.
About half of the piglets died from being crushed, suffocated and thrown from the truck. A female passenger in the semitrailer was injured, according to Dayton Daily News.
The accident occurred when the uninjured semitrailer driver lost control and slammed into a guardrail.
The truck was traveling to Indiana from South Carolina.
