The Indian army has attacked rebel camps in Myanmar, killing over 100 rebels in retaliation to a series of attacks by the insurgents that killed as many as 30 Indian soldiers over the last couple of weeks.
One ministry of home affairs source said the attack lasted for about 45 minutes The Times of India reported.
The most recent attack on the Indian Army took place on Thursday, which claimed the lives of about 20 soldiers when the insurgents ambushed a troop convoy in northeast India.
Major. Gen. Ranbir Singh was in contact with Myanmar authorities in relation to the operation and the troops inflicted "significant casualties on the rebels." The commandos returned safely to Indian territory after the successful cross-border surgical strike.
The Indian army had initiated a massive search with the help of hundreds of soldiers and air support to track down the insurgent groups, who, according to intelligence, had crossed the border into Myanmar after Thursday's attack in Manipur. Authorities in Manipur have been struggling for years with the rebellion, which involves a number of militant groups, according to BBC News.
"There is a history of close cooperation between our two militaries. We look forward to working with them to combat such terrorism," the Indian Army said in a statement, NDTV reported. "While ensuring peace and tranquility along the border and in the border states, any threat to our security, safety and national integrity will meet a firm response."
