A Montana man massacred his family members by fatally shooting them in their heads in their log cabin before burning down the home and then killing himself, AP reported.
He shot his wife in the kitchen, his one-year-old baby in the crib and his two other children, ages 4 and 6, outdoors.
After killing all four, the man brought the bodies inside and arranged them on the bed. He then phoned a friend telling him about what he did.
"He called and said he killed his wife and kids, and now he was going to set the place on fire," Assistant Police Chief Bill Sather said, ABC News reported. That friend he called dialed 911 and authorities immediately searched for the cabin that is located in a remote area.
The log cabin is on a mountain ridge in southwestern Montana's Beaverhead Deerlodge National Forest, so remote that it took a long time for the authorities to get to the area, especially since it doesn't have an exact address.
"It's just kind of up in the wilderness," Anaconda-Deer Lodge Police Chief Tim Barkell said as they went to the location of the crime, 15 miles southeast from the town of Deer Lodge. "That's what took us so long to get there."
Detective Steve Barclay said that smoke was pouring from the eaves of the cabin when they arrived, preventing him from going in.
According to Fox News, when the firefighters were done putting out the fire, Barclay was first to enter and find the bodies, including that of the 59-year-old man who shot himself after setting a chair on fire.
Identities of the victims and the shooter are still unclear, as well as the motive of the crime.
Authorities haven't interviewed the person who called 911 yet.
The bodies have been taken to the state crime lab in Missoula. More information about the shootings will be released soon.
