An Australian Christian couple has made a bold declaration in that they will divorce if same-sex marriage is legalized in their home country.
Nick Jensen explained the couple's reason in putting an end to their 10-year-old marriage in an article that was published in the new issue of Canberra CityNews, where he appeared on the cover alongside his wife Sara, under the headline "Gay law change may force us to divorce."
In the artice, Jensen states that this was not a traditional divorce that was decided upon lightly by the two parties.
Jensen stressed that the pair will continue to live together, have children, refer to each other as husband and wife and consider themselves married "by the Church and before God" and that they are legally ending their marriage under the belief that "marriage is not a human intervention," according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
Jensen writes: "Our view is that marriage is a fundamental order of creation. Part of God's human history. Marriage is the union of a man and a woman before a community in the sight of God. And marriage of any couple is important to God regardless of whether that couple recognises God's involvement or authority in it."
Jensen also added that he and his wife refuse to accept the Australian government's regulation of marriage if its definition will include the solemnization of couples of the same sex.
Canberra CityNews has received a barrage of criticism from outraged readers, saying that they were "appalled" that the publication ran the piece.
Ian Meikle, the editor of the magazine, defended its decision to publish the article, saying that the couple had an interesting angle and felt that the article was "newsworthy," according to News Corp Australia.
