For both show watchers and book readers alike, the representation of the Sand Snakes and Dorne as a whole has been a big letdown this season on "Game of Thrones." Despite a beautiful shooting location in Seville, Spain and strong source material, the Dornish plot lines on HBO's hit show have felt more like stalling tactics without much substance. That belief was only reinforced by the neat and clean resolution that Jaime, Prince Doran, Ellaria Sand, Bronn, etc. came to on Sunday's episode.
But perhaps a strong finish will help to salvage this poor plot line. According to Sand Snake actress Jessica Henwick (Nymeria Sand), there are going to be some big moments for Dorne in the upcoming season finale.
"What happens with the Sand Snakes is...extreme," Henwick said of the finale. "Very extreme. So I'm really curious to see how people take it. I don't know what else I can say! Episode 10 sets the rest of the show on a very certain path. It's a big move in Game of Thrones, and the Sand Snakes are a part of it."
What could that mean? When last we saw the trio of troublemakers, they were looking despondent as Ellaria bent the knee to Prince Doran. While another violent outburst from the Sand Snakes wouldn't be unexpected, Henwick's comments made it sound as if the Dornish happenings will set the stage for next season. That means "Thrones" fans should expect something a bit more meaningful to the overarching plot.
The season five finale of "Game of Thrones" will air this Sunday night at 9 p.m. on HBO.
