The Dallas Cowboys have made a decision regarding safety Jeff Heath; it appears the team has signed the talented special teams player to a four- year contract. Heath was not a lock to even remain on the roster, however Dallas has apparently made a move to make him apart of its long-term future.

Dallas respects Heath's productivity on special teams and regards him as one of its key depth players for the secondary. Heath began his career with the Cowboys in 2013 when he joined the club as an undrafted free agent out of Saginaw Valley State. He was forced to start at safety in nine games during his rookie year which left him exposed as he routinely gave up big plays. He found a niche role on special teams where he has turned into a star and has recorded the fourth-most special teams tackles in 2014 and the most during the 2015 season.

Heath is often regarded as a guy who will play behind starters such as Byron Jones, Barry Church and even J.J. Wilcox. The Cowboys have slowly been re-signing their own players instead of going out and focusing on free agents, as they believe the roster plus their additional picks in the 2016 NFL Draft should be enough to put the franchise back on top of the NFC East.

The sudden and somewhat astonishing trade made by the Los Angeles Rams today means that the Cowboys will see both of the draft's top quarterbacks get selected with the first and second picks. Since Dallas needs a backup quarterback for Romo I doubt they would invest any extra picks into moving up, especially now. They have a decent shot at landing one of (if not the) best player in the draft in defensive back Jalen Ramsey.

It would be surprising after all of this Ezekiel Elliott and Joey Bosa talk that the Cowboys don't select one of them but instead get a chance at either star offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil or Ramsey. Tunsil is the best offensive lineman in the draft and could cause a team to make an offer to the Cowboys for their fourth overall selection. The only way the Cowboys would move back in this draft is to land Elliott around the end of the top 10 picks in the first round.

With the Chargers likely looking to add some protection and talent to their offensive line, the Cowboys top overall player on their draft board in Ramsey could be available. If they do in fact select Ramsey, signing Heath for the next four years would just add to this emerging defensive backfield's depth.
